Purpose of the guide
This guide is aimed at users who use Windows 10, it allows you to optimize the energy saving of laptops and consequently increase their autonomy.
Main tips
Use battery saver
When battery saver is turned on, your mobile device temporarily disables some features that use a large amount of power, such as automatic email and calendar syncing, live tile updates, and apps you aren't actively using. Using battery saver is the easiest way to extend battery life.
Select the Start button, then choose Settings > System > Battery . If you want to turn on battery saver whenever the charge drops below a certain level, select Automatically turn on battery saver when battery power gets below : and set the desired level. To enable battery saver now and leave it on until you charge your PC again, enable Battery saver until next charge .
Change your display settings
Change some of your PC's display settings to extend battery life. For example:
Set a shorter duration for the screen when active |
Select the Start button and then select Settings > System > Power & Sleep . Under If on battery, turn off after select a shorter duration. |
Reduce the screen brightness |
Select the Start button and then select Settings > System > Display . Disable Automatically adjusts brightness when lighting changes (if displayed), then use the Change Brightness slider to set the brightness level you want. |
Use a dark background |
Select the Start button, select Settings > Personalization > Wallpaper , and then choose a dark image or a dark solid color. |
Use a dark theme |
Select the Start button , select Settings > Personalization > Themes > Theme Settings , and then choose a dark theme. |
Change your power management settings
Change some of your PC's display settings to extend battery life. For example:

Select the Start button and then select Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshooter> Power and then select Run Troubleshooter .

Set a shorter duration for the PC in sleep mode |
Select the Start button and then select Settings > System > Power & Sleep . Under If running on battery, PC goes to sleep after , choose a shorter duration. |
Disconnect from a Wi-Fi network for the PC in sleep mode |
Select the Start button and then select Settings > System > Power & Sleep> when the PC is in standby and disconnects from the network . Choose the Always or Managed by Windows setting instead of Never . This option is not available on all PCs and depends on the PC hardware and manufacturer. |
Close the lid |
Most laptops can go to sleep mode automatically when you close the lid. To set this setting, select the Start button and then select Settings > System > Power & Sleep > additional power settings > choose lid closure . |
Choose a lower Power Saving Mode |
Select the battery icon on the right side of the taskbar. To reduce energy use, move the slider towards Maximum battery life . This option is not available on all PCs and depends on the PC hardware and manufacturer. |
Press the power button |
Most PCs allow you to turn off the screen, shut down, or go to sleep or hibernate mode by pressing the power button. To choose the power buttons, select the Start button and then select Settings > System > Power & Sleep > Additional Power Settings and then choose the Power buttons . |
Change your sync settings
You can increase battery life by changing your PC sync frequency. For example:
Synchronize email less frequently. |
Select the Start button and then select Settings > Accounts > Email Accounts & . Select the account you want to change and then select Manage > Change Mailbox Sync Settings . Under Download new emails , choose a longer interval. |
Sync only the emails, calendars and contacts you want. |
You don't have to sync emails, calendars or contacts. Select the Start button and then select Settings > Accounts > Email Accounts & . Select the account you want to change and the Manage button and then select Change sync settings . Under Sync options, turn off Email , Calendar or Contacts . |
Other things you can do
Keep the PC plugged into the mains until it is fully charged. |
To check your PC's battery level, hover your mouse pointer over the battery icon on the taskbar or go to Settings > System > Battery . |
Reboot the PC. |
This operation sometimes fixes problems that can reduce battery life. Select the Start button, then select Power > Restart . |
Turn on airplane mode if you don't need Internet, Bluetooth, or other wireless communications. |
